MYTH BUSTER: Eating Fat Is Good For You!
Are you ready to lose weight? Perhaps the best intervention is to become current with newer research on old belief systems regarding weight loss. Understanding why food is our best medicine is a better use of your energy. Let’s review cellular biology a bit.
Everything we eat can be broken down into 3 categories: Fats, Carbohydrates and Protein. Each have stored energy for use in our bodies. Fats have 9 calories per gram (cal/g), carbs and proteins only 4 cal/g. Therein lies the myth that is is better to eat carbs and proteins, rather than fat. Fat is bad, carbs and protein are good. “We have been told “energy in energy out” for the last half century, and it became the mantra for dieting. Since fat has more calories per gram, we are told to stay away from it. Fat free is the standard. What you may not know, is fats are necessary for health, and carbs turn into sugar which is stored in the body as fat. There, I have said it. Stored carbs=more fat in the body. Have we been misled? YES! https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23801097/
We are told “food is fuel”. This is a fact, and food is so much more. It is information, in the form of neurotransmission, hormones and mood. It is connection, and a very social part of our lives. It is medicine, as you know food can both harm and heal you. When food is in balance, it can help you maintain the lifestyle you so love (or once had if you are ill today.) Just leaving fat out of your diet is not enough. In fact, it will make you ill.
